James M. Cookman

James M. “Jim” Cookman has been a member of the Board of Directors of The Mutual Protective Association of West Virginia since 1998. During his tenure as a member of the Board, Mr. Cookman has advocated for improving the organizations efficiencies through the adoption of an automated company management system along with an associated website portal for use by its agents and customers, and for expanding the organizations premium writings through organic growth.
Mr. Cookman studied at West Virginia University and Fairmont State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. After graduation, Mr. Cookman completed the Westfield Companies Field Consultant Training Program consisting of professional development and technical skills training across all areas of insurance including personal lines, commercial lines, farm, life & health, group, bonding and investments. The program provided a comprehensive overview of the insurance industry from underwriting to claims and IT to audit. In essence, the program incorporated class room training with real world on the job experience and resulted in the equivalent of a Master’s Degree in insurance and investments.
Mr. Cookman joined his father in the management and operation of Cookman Insurance Group, Inc., a closely held family owned independent insurance agency founded in 1946, where he currently serves as its president. The firm serves individuals, families, business and industry and government agencies throughout the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia and the region. The agency provides all lines of insurance coverage to its clients.
Mr. Cookman has served as a member of the Board of Directors of Summit Financial Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMMF), a financial holding company with $1.6 Billion in assets, based in Moorefield, West Virginia, since his appointment in 1994. Through its subsidiary companies, the firm provides community banking and insurance services through its 15 offices located in West Virginia and Virginia.
